5. Design for Catarsis by Marisol

Illustration for the merchandising clothing of the album "Catarsis" by Marisol Eichborn

Marisol Eichborn was preparing for her debut concert to showcase her upcoming album release. In tandem with the event, she thought of a collection of second-hand clothing adorned with screen-printed designs that paid homage to the album's title, "Catarsis."

She entrusted me with the task of crafting the design, which needed to encapsulate the essence of catharsis—originally defined in ancient Greek theater as the purifying and liberating effect evoked by tragedy, that generated a multitude of emotions. Marisol also expressed a desire for the design to incorporate abundant natural elements, including a big sun, a modernist aesthetic, and ideally, references to the masks of Greek theater. Additionally, it needed to be a line drawing for ease of screen printing.

In response to this brief, I created a framed composition inspired by the stylistic elements of Modernist book covers. The design depicted a progression towards illumination, mirroring the cathartic journey. At the lower part of the scene, we see no flora, rain falls, and various creatures hide themselves, drawing inspiration from the Greek theater masks. As the eye ascends along the stems of the plants, the rain transforms into sunbeams, flowers blossom, and diverse insects emerge, symbolizing renewal and vitality. The entire design is framed by an organic, modernist-style frame, with the title "Catarsis" inscribed at the bottom.

Later on, Marisol and I handprinted this design in a studio in Barcelona.
