3. Mia de Freitas

Promo pictures for singer Mia de Freitas

These nine photographs are part of an exercise that I had to do for my first-year photography class at university. The statement given to us was to make nine portraits of the same person in the same place using an American plan. The objective was for us to learn to create dynamic and balanced compositions using practically only one body.

Mia de Freitas, the girl in the photos, is a singer-songwriter (who also happens to be my friend) so I wanted to take these photos of her so that she too could use them as promotional photos. I asked her to bring her guitar because, not only did it help us talk about her work, but also so she had some object that she knew very well and that gave her security when posing. This element helped me build lines of composition and, thanks to its color, create a chromatic contrast to the blue that predominated throughout the scene.

These photos were taken in a corner of my room where, at a certain time of the afternoon, there’s beautiful natural lighting. It was the first photography exercise I did for this class and it helped me enormously to understand the importance of composition, both the elements and colors.
